We hung out with other alternative kids, the hardcore ones. We also had a little garage band together (he was the drummer and I was the guitarist player, no singer or bassist yet) and we rocked out on Nirvana music all weekend, smoked some weed and broke into his dad's liquor cabinet to mourn.
It was right before the weekend so we planned a sleepover to commiserate. Almost in tears, I called my friend Jason, who had also heard. His body had been found that morning and since this was pre-internet, I had sat in school all day, none the wiser, just like everyone else. Then Kurt Loder interrupted with a special news report about Kurt Cobain's death. I remember tuning in to MTV after school (I was in eighth grade), as I usually did, to watch some random music videos. I'm going to spend the bulk of this talking about Cobain's death, because that's what this record has always represented to me. But this is the best of the posthumous Nirvana releases, and perhaps their best record period. There have been releases by the band afterwards, mostly live performances and some unreleased music, however it has been scarce over the years (his estate is way better protected than those of other rock stars who met an untimely end like Jimi Hendrix and Prince). And it was the first major release by the band after Cobain's death, a last missive to both casual and hardcore fans of the band. Nirvana Unplugged was filmed/recorded 6 months before Cobain's death by suicide on Apand released 7 months later, book-ending the tragic event. We will also never know for sure whether Cobain intended this performance as some kind of final performance, or whether this design choice was part of his macabre aesthetic. Whether this is true or whether it is the producer's flawed recollection adding to the mythology of Cobain will never be known.
